All city, county and state offices will be closed Thursday and Friday in observance of the Thanksgiving holiday. That includes the senior center, Extension service, animal shelter and convenience center. The PVA, clerk, sheriff and circuit clerk offices will be open only a half-day Wednesday, closing at noon. However, the judge-executive’s office will be open all day Wednesday. The public library and federal offices, including the postal service, will be closed only Thanksgiving Day. The Crittenden Press will be closed Thursday and Friday for Thanksgiving, but the newspaper will be on newsstands as usual next Wednesday.

The victim in this accident has been identified by state police as 58-year-old David Adams of Providence. See this week's printed edition of The Crittenden Press for details. ORIGINAL POST There was a single-vehicle fatal traffic accident on US 60 West at the bottom of Moore Hill. A local man has died. The name of the victim has not been released at this time. The crashed involved a pickup truck and occurred about 1:45am this morning.

Leaf collection inside the City of Marion started this week and continues through Dec. 21. Pick-up will be conducted Monday through Thursday of each week, except for Thanksgiving Day. A general, citywide collection is slated for December to wrap up the service for the year. Here is the schedule: Quadrant 1 Area north of West Bellville Street and west of North Main Street/Fords Ferry Road. Pickup will be Nov. 5, 12, 13, 26, 27 and Dec. 6 and 10. Barry Gilbert, 71, of Marion died Tuesday, Nov. 13. Gilbert is a former Marion City Administrator and retired National Guard colonel. Gilbert Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Local volunteer firemen are currently fighting a blaze at a two-story home on Mt. Zion Church Road, which is in the Amish Community near Mattoon.

Due to weather, classes for Thursday, Nov. 14, 2018  have been cancelled in Crittenden County.

Crittenden County Food Bank distribution will be this Friday, Nov. 16. Distribution is a week earlier due to Thanksgiving. This week's printed edition of The Crittenden Press had an incorrect date. Individuals and families can pick up food from 8am until noon at the Crittenden County PACS office at 402 North Walker Street.

Crittenden County School District will be dismissing classes at 2pm today in order to stay ahead of the predicted weather storm heading this way this afternoon. All after-school activities will be cancelled, including Rocket football practice.

UPDATE: 10:15 a.m. Crittenden County Judge-Executive Perry Newcom said a conference call with weather officials this morning have shed a bit more light on the approaching winter storm, with lighter totals expected for the county compared with earlier reports. "They have our area in a Winter Weather Advisory and are expecting precipitation to start late this afternoon and run through mid-morning tomorrow," said Newcom. "Snow accumulations of 2-3 inches possible, but more likely 1 inch. Ice/sleet mix of less than 1/10 of an inch is likely for us." County officials are asking motorists to stay off the roadway as much as possible tonight and tomorrow morning. "They did say the morning commute would be the most treacherous time for our area and to use extreme caution if traveling that time of day and to give plenty of extra time for travel," Newcom added. The Marion Christmas Parade will begin at 5 p.m., on Saturday, Dec. 1 and will move along the traditional route on Main Street in downtown. The new U.S. 641 that will connect Marion with Fredonia could be open by the end of this month, possibly even before the holiday season arrives, according to the Kentucky Department of Transportation. “We’re thinking around Thanksgiving,” said DOT spokesman Keith Todd. When the 2018 construction season started, Nov. 15 was the target date for opening. Weather and other various delays have pushed that project back a couple of weeks. Paving at the north end of the new Super 2 highway just south of Marion has taken place in the last few days, showing visible progress toward completion of the tie-in with the current highway. Crittenden County School District has concluded its investigation regarding how a .22-caliber bullet – found by an elementary student Monday – ended up on a school bus.   After interviewing several students and watching bus video, school officials said it is impossible to determine how or when the bullet was brought onto the bus. "We feel  the action did not involve 'sinister intent' based on the information we gathered from video and student interviews," said Supt. Vince Clark. "The take-away from this incident is that we all have a role to play in providing safety and security for our students and community. Parents and family members need to secure all ammunition and weapons in a secure place in the home, preferably in separate locations. Additionally, all students and staff will continue to be vigilant, as safety and security continue to be our top priority." Crittenden County Schools conducted a security investigation this morning after a student found a .22-caliber bullet on a school bus at the end of the route to school. The student gave the bullet to the bus driver, who promptly reported it school officials. School administrators, including School Resource Officer John Shofner, immediately secured the bus – which was at the high school and middle school campus – and a security check was conducted of each student and the bus. Backpacks, students and the bus were all thoroughly searched. No other ammunition was found and it was concluded that it was safe to release all students to class, said Supt. Vince Clark. Elementary students on the bus were initially taken off the vehicle and into the school while the search was conducted. They were later put back on the bus and taken to their school, only a few minutes late. The school districted is not releasing the bus number or particular route at this time, as the investigation is continuing. ...

There will be a Pasture, Rangeland and Forage (PRF) insurance informational meeting at 6:30pm on Tuesday, Nov. 6 at the UK Extension Annex on US 60 East of Marion.   Participants will learn more about this insurance option for forages that is based on precipitation – rainfall index.  The PRF Program is insurance protection for forage losses (grazing or haying) which may result in increased costs.   Crittenden County Cattlemen’s Association will meet afterwards.  Please call the Extension Office to register at 270-965-5236.

South American missionary Norma Hunt will be speaking at Piney Fork Cumberland Presbyterian Church at 6pm this Sunday evening, Nov. 4, about her experiences. She has been a missionary for many years and is formerly of Marion. Hunt will also be at Marion Church of God in Marion Sunday morning for an 11am program.

ORIGINAL POST Crittenden-Livingston Water District distribution line leak on Weldon Road in Crittenden County is affecting a number of residents at the south end of Weldon Road, KY 506,  KY 1077, Copperas Springs Road, and Lone Star Road. This is a six-inch line break and those affected are without water for now.

I want to take this opportunity to respond to the attack on me in a Letter to the Editor printed in this week’s Crittenden Press by the incumbent County Attorney, where she was responding to a previous letter written by our Jailer Robbie Kirk. In my opponent’s letter, she said – among other things directed at our very respected Jailer who has worked so hard to make the jail an asset to our community – that I was “soft on crime”.  Since the Press does not allow any new letters but only responses to prior letters in the week before election, a very well known rule, it was a cheap shot after the bell. Therefore, I want to respond here. Nothing in my public record, not one thing that I have written, stated or advertised would lead any responsible person to think I would be soft on crime.  I have consistently said that I want to be tough and Smart on how we incarcerate.
